Llay Welfare Football Club was founded in 1930-31 and entered the Wrexham and District League in which we were runners-up in the 1936-37 season. Following the Second World War the team joined the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) and we won our only League title to date in season 1962-63, this was a superb achievement at the time in an extremely strong League. During that Championship triumph The Welfare played 30 games, won 25 of them, drew 3 and lost just twice scoring an amazing 97 goals and conceding just 22; yet we only managed to win the title by just 3 points from Welshpool.

Since that title win we have had numerous promotions and relegations but that elusive goal of again winning the top Division has remained just that. We enjoyed some great times during the late 1970’s when we won the NEWFA Cup for the only time (so far!!) and again with Swinny’s Army in the 90’s, one particular coach-trip to Morda in the Welsh Cup during Ken Swinnerton’s management reign has been firmly inscribed in Welfare history!!

Talking of Welsh Cup exploits, the best we ever achieved was to reach the 6th Round in 1936-37 before losing at home to Crewe Alexandra of the English Football League; just what they were doing in the Welsh Cup is beyond me. In the 4th Round it is worth noting we had beaten Hereford United at home 4-3 too. There was reportedly a huge crowd at The Welly for the Crewe game, and we didn’t need stands, covered terraces or barriers to host the match!
We have, over the years seen off other Football Club’s in the Village, notably Llay United and Llay RBL who were both very successful in their era’s. But everyone connected with Llay Welfare is extremely proud of our very long history, and feel we are now sowing the seeds for new and exiting times ahead.

For six seasons from 1996 we actually ran three sides in the Welsh National League and had a team in the Premier Division, Division One and Division Two and it is something we would again like to achieve in the near future.
