Llay travelled the short distance to Neighbours and local rivals Castell Alun hoping 3 pts would give them a push towards the top of the league to which their opponents currently sit. Looking at recent form with Llay boasting the best defensive record in the league and Castell Alun holding the most goals scored stats , with both only loosing once in the league this term this was always going to be a close game.

Llay lined up with Mike Platt in Goal behind the leagues tightest and toughest defence with one change which was Darran Jones who reverted to a left back role along side, ever presents Chris Owens Dave Griffiths and Boxer. The midfield four consisted of last week’s match winner Johnny Taylor on the left wing and Ollie Allman on the right operating either side of Nathan Humphreys making his second debut after signing back on the Friday his centre midfield partner Dave Phennah. Leading the attack was Daniel Hughes and Ian Mathias. Very strong Bench of Owen Roberts, George Koumas and Dan Parry.

The game started and from the off on a small bobbly pitch the early signs was a scrappy game was in store. The first 10 minutes was a close affair with Dan Hughes squandering a good early chance and Castell Alun only looking to pressure the Llay defence with their pace by using a long ball.

The best passing move of the game on 20 mins produced the first goal and good linkup between Dan Hughes and Ian Mathias found Nathan Humphreys in an advanced position to slot the ball home against his former club. The rest of the first half belonged to Castell Alun who had a few half chances a goal ruled out for offside and numerous corners. Following failure to clear from a Castell Alun attack a soft free kick was conceded on the edge of Llay’s Penalty area and Mike Pritchard the League’s top goal scorer managed to put the ball past Platt in goal from 20 yards Half Time

1-1 close game.

Half time Vaughn and Foxy expected and demanded more from their Llay side with this ringing in the players ears this seemed to give Llay some drive.

Llay were tighter and more commanding all over the pitch and took the game to their opponents. Llay dominating the second half won succession of corners Johnny Taylor wasted a free kick and Llay were looking dangerous.

Llay were the better side but could not make the pressure count. Castell Alun looked to play on the break and was stopped twice by last ditch blocks by Boxer and Chris Owens. A main talking point of the game was the referee making two shocking decisions one was to leave Mike Pritchard on the pitch moments after getting book for a late challenge he made a wreck less challenge on Darran Jones from behind healso failed to give Llay a stone wall penalty when Dave Phennah was blatantly pushed over in the penalty area. Llay searched for the Winner to the 90th Minute but to no avail a draw possibly a fair result.

Maybe this had a draw written all over but limiting the league’s top scorers to one goal and having chances to secure the win will give Llay confidence going into another big league game against Penycae on Saturday having already beaten them in the League Cup 2 weeks ago.

Chirk AAA’s remain in second position in the Welsh National League Premier Division after a hard fought encounter with Llay Welfare and hey are now two points behind the leaders. It was stalemate in the first period with Joe Roberts twice going close for Chirk and Ian Matthias just grazing the Chirk bar with a fierce drive for Llay. Chirk came out firing on all cylinders in the second period and in the 50th minute Andrew Swarbrick broke the deadlock when he raced past the static Welfare rearguard to fire home past Pritchard in the Llay goal. Within minutes Llay were level when Darren Jones broke from deep to level with Chirk keeper Davies left exposed. Llay gained the initiative and gave Chirk some real problems and only some smart saves from Davies keeping the buoyant Llay strikers out. Chirk gradually regained their composure and both Swarbrick and Price went close before sub Lewis Penrose struck a fierce drive past Pritchard on 80 minutes and to seal the points Chris Roberts beat three defenders in the box before slipping the ball past the advancing keeper
